Anxiety
Anxiety

Anxiety is a feeling of intense worry and uneasiness due to fear and dread. It might cause you to feel restless and tense, disoriented, experience shortness of breath, and have a rapid heartbeat. It can be a normal reaction to stress or unexpected situations. For example, you might feel anxious when faced with a difficult problem at work, before taking a test, or before making and important decision.

Our therapeutic approach focuses on helping individuals to recognize the signs of anxiety, develop techniques that change their reactions towards a stressor or event, and implement strategies that will help with the reduction of the experienced symptoms.

Depression

Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities. It affects how we feel, think, and behave, and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. You may have difficulty managing day-to-day activities, and may sometimes feel that life isn't worth living.

For many people with depression, symptoms usually are severe enough to cause noticeable problems in day-to-day activities, such as work, school, social activities, or relationships. Some people may feel generally miserable or unhappy without really knowing why. Symptoms of depression can also manifest differently on individuals. With children, signs may include sadness, irritability, clinginess, refusal to go to school. While with teens and young adults, symptoms may include sadness, irritability, feeling negative and worthlessness, anger, poor performance, feeling misunderstood and extremely sensitive, using recreational drugs or alcohol, and avoidance of social interactions.

While it may feel difficult to manage and easy to get discouraged, it is not a sign of weakness. Together, we can develop the best approach to an effective treatment. In incorporating problem solving techniques for behavioral activation, you can self-manage your symptoms to incorporate problem solving tools and improve interpersonal relationships.

Relationships
Relationships

A relationship is any connection between two people, or a group of individuals such as family, which can be positive or negative. These relationships can vary in intimacy, emotional attachment, and commitment involved. People engage in many different types of relationships that have unique characteristics, and vary in terms of closeness, and may evolve in different times throughout the individuals lives.

How you define your relationship depends on various factors, including what matters to you and how the other person feels. Figuring out what matters is an important step  in defining the type of relationship you are interested in having. Working towards effective communication and active listening skills, and identification of healthy boundaries, while achieving mutual respect and trust can help you achieve the relationship you would like to have with others.

Couples Therapy
Couples Therapy

Couples can develop habits that change over time and no longer work for them. Couples therapy can give you and your partner the opportunity to discuss and resolve issues related to several aspects of the relationship. Many of these can include but are not limited to: roles in the relationship, beliefs and values, finances, time spent together, children, sex and intimacy, infidelity, and external stressors.

Couples therapy focuses on improving relationship satisfaction and conflict resolution between couples by improving communication skills, strengthening their bond, and building or rebuilding trust, while working towards extinguishing dysfunctional behavior. This extends to married, dating, and engaged; heterosexual or same-sex. Couples therapy can be a place to learn new ways of interacting to get your needs met and to practice them in a safe place with the goal of implementing the developed tools on your own.

Trauma
Trauma

Trauma can mean many different things to different individuals, it is identified by the American Psychological Association as an emotional response to a distressing experience. When we talk about emotional or psychological trauma, we might mean situations or events we find traumatic and how we have been affected by those experiences. These traumas can be acute, chronic, complex, secondary or vicarious, or from adverse childhood experiences.

The effects of trauma responses can activate your sympathetic nervous system, stimulating a wide range of responses such as fight-flight-freeze-or-fawn. Short term fear, anxiety, shock, and anger/aggression are normal responses to trauma. Long-term responses may develop emotional disturbances such as extreme anxiety, anger, sadness, survivors guilt, disassociation, and the inability to feel pleasure. There are multiple avenues of treatment available for individuals experiencing short-term or long-term trauma. Working with a trauma-informed therapist that implements trauma focused cognitive behavioral techniques, individual can develop effective coping skills, achieve a greater sense of self, and gain a deeper appreciation for life.

Adolescent Therapy
Adolescent Therapy

Adolescent therapy helps pre-teens and teens deal with specific emotions and develop the skills to help them navigate the challenges of adolescence, manage life stressors, and adjust to major changes. Some indicators that teens may need additional support or counseling include: persistent feelings of hopelessness, feeling sad, angry, or anxious, having difficulty focusing, changes in behavior or isolation, drop in grades, changes in eating habits. Severe symptoms may include extreme mood swings, self-destructive behaviors, and thoughts or acts of self-harm or suicide.

Learning to regulate their emotions is important for teens as they grow into young adults. It is important for teens to develop a greater sense of self worth by learning healthy coping skills that can help them navigate experienced challenges and triggers. We work with our teens towards identifying strengths and designing a therapeutic goal that fits their unique need.
